Family doctors, also known as general practitioners, play a very important role in the personal health and medical system. They are usually the first person a patient sees when any questions about their health arise. Family-doctor services cover treatment, prevention and referral to other specialists.
When can you see a family doctor?
At our clinic in Vilnius, family-doctor services are provided to people of all ages: infants, children, working-age adults and seniors. Most often, patients come to the clinic when they feel acute symptoms of illness, such as fever, cough or pain. Other patients regularly see specialist doctors, so they first come to the family doctor, who issues a referral and can order the necessary tests. Some people also have chronic diseases that require constant monitoring and review of the treatment plan. However, it is very important not to forget prevention. “Even if nothing hurts and you have no complaints, you should visit your family doctor regularly; taking your age and medical history into account, they will suggest taking part in preventive programmes or tests,” advises family doctor Monika Kvedaraitė.
